History
Vav-Tharad district was officially created on 2 October 2025 by the Government of Gujarat. It is the 34th district of the state.
The district was carved out from the existing Banaskantha district to improve administrative efficiency and bring government services closer to people in the region.
Background and significance:
Before becoming a separate district, the area now known as Vav-Tharad was part of Banaskantha district for decades. Banaskantha was one of Gujarat’s largest districts by area, and residents often had to travel long distances (30–85 km) to reach the Banaskantha headquarters at Palanpur for administrative work.
The formation of Vav-Tharad fulfilled a long-standing local demand for better administrative access and governance.
Geography & Composition :
The district lies in North Gujarat, bordering Rajasthan to the north and the Rann of Kutch region to the west, with the West Banas River flowing through parts of the area.
It includes 8 talukas such as Vav, Tharad, Suigam, Lakhani, Deodar, Bhabhar, Rah, and Dharnidhar.
Older Historical Roots (Tharad & Region):
The town of Tharad itself dates back to the medieval period, historically known as Thirpur and influenced by Rajput and local chieftains in the region’s borderlands. It later became part of the British-era Palanpur Agency under the Bombay Presidency and then a taluka in Banaskantha district after India’s independence and the formation of Gujarat in 1960.
In summary, Vav-Tharad district’s history is mainly shaped by recent administrative restructuring aimed at improving governance, along with a longer historical tradition in the region centered around towns like Tharad that have existed since medieval times.
